Description
The brain and the mind are inextricably linked; however, where one ends and the other begins is a subject still exercising the minds (or brains?) of scientists who write many thousands of pages of theories on the subject. Dictionaries give basically the same, although slightly varying, explanations of the word “brain”. The Macquarie International English Dictionary says “The brain is an organ of thought and feeling; the controlling centre of the nervous system.” The World Book Dictionary says, “The brain is the soft mass of nerve cells and nerve fibres enclosed in the skull with which we can learn, think and remember.” The New Oxford English Dictionary says “The brain is the organ of soft nervous tissue which fills the cranium of humans …” The technical name for our brain is the Encephalon. This word comes from the Greek, meaning “what is inside the head”. Most people would be familiar with the words ‘encephalogram’ which is an x-ray, or photo, of the brain and ‘encephalitis’ meaning inflammation of the brain, usually caused by a viral infection.
