You have a choice of two paths to follow in life. One path is inviting, it is paved with ‘good intentions’ and it is wide and easy to walk on. The other path is narrow, soft underfoot, rather overgrown and not at all inviting. Which path would you prefer to travel? The first path is easy to take because most people follow it. Difficulties are few and when you are following so many people, it is unnecessary to call on your creative qualities.
The other path, however, will require you to be vigilant that you do not stray from its narrow center and because it is so overgrown from lack of use, many obstacles will present themselves and must be overcome. It will take all your focus and clarity of vision to reach your destination. As John Rockefeller said, “If you want to succeed you have to forge new paths and avoid borrowed ones”.
Why don’t more people dare to be different? Why is it that only 5% of the population are financially successful? Most people want the success but they are not prepared to work to lay a solid foundation necessary to achieve their dream. If you are idle, you will not eat; if you do not believe something is possible, it will be impossible for you. It takes an open mind and an open heart and a belief in yourself to harness the power to be different.
Success doesn’t usually come to average people. They are average because they choose to look, speak and act like others who fit into the norm. Success comes to those who think differently, dream differently and act differently. When you are different you stand out from the crowd and ask “What is possible?” and not, “what is somebody else doing?” It doesn’t matter what business you are in, you must set yourself apart and think laterally. Your strategies must be different and unique if you wish to draw success to you.
Coco Chanel, famous French Couturier, summed it up beautifully when she said, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” To achieve your dream you must be prepared to separate yourself from the crowd, to move away from the accepted ‘norms’. While a large proportion of the population will swim downstream, because it takes less expended effort, you must be swimming upstream, against the current of public opinion, because your goal is the source of the stream, not the outflow to the ocean of mediocrity.
Those who do not blindly follow the crowd and ‘fit in’ with the status quo are often frowned upon and demeaned. However, being different is actually a powerful tool and a necessity for achieving success. If you wish to be different you must harness your thought power and refuse to be dictated to by circumstances. As Napoleon said, “Circumstances, circumstances, what are circumstances? I create circumstances.” You must draw on your creative mind power with purpose and focus and determine that you will look past and overcome difficult situations by searching out solutions. You will create new ideas, possibilities and new opportunities to achieve your goal and ultimate prosperity.
Those who have achieved real success by being different have learned to mix work with relaxation. High performers know that stress impairs their ability to perform so they know when to stop and relax their body and mind to prevent fatigue and frustration. Learn to harness the power of relaxation and the journey to your goal will be so much easier, especially when you combine it with positive visualisation of what you are aiming for.
